Rules for Minesweeper
Rule Basics
Each level of the game has a different number of squares and mines which you must clear. Try to clear a path by selecting the tiles without mines as quickly as possible. You win when all of the tiles without mines have been cleared.
Playing the Minesweeper
Click on an empty square to see if it is clear or not.
If it is clear, it will disappear. If there are mines near it, the number of tiles with mines surrounding it will appear in the square. This will be up to 8, since each tile has at most, 8 surrounding tiles.
If there is no mines nearby, the computer will happily start to remove other tiles until it detects tiles with mines nearby.
Enhancements to Minesweeper
If you hold the control key while clicking, it will place a flag. This may be used to designate which tile probably has a mine. It will also keep you from accidentally clicking on the tile and blowing yourself up. You are limited to the same number of flags as you have mines on your board.
If you have a flag on a tile, and control click on it again, it will convert to a "?". You may have as many "?" tiles as you wish.
Hint: You may use the "Calculate Danger" button to help you determine the likely hood of a tile containing a mine. It gathers the danger level based upon the number of tiles nearby that have numbers. The more likely a tile is to have a mine, the brighter red it will appear.
After Playing Minesweeper
If you lose (you clicked on a tile with a mine) you may always choose to start a new game. There are four levels, so you use the drop down menu to select which one for you to view.
If you win, you may record your time. A Scoreboard will be available to determine who won, and with what score (time) for each of the four settings. You do not have to enter your name if you do not want to. After entering (or not) your name, you may start a new game.
